NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Alton Everett Smith, wanted as a fugitive from justice on 37 counts of possessing child pornography, was apprehended this morning after he tried to get away by scaling down the outside of the towering Oceania Beach Club, 421 South Atlantic Avenue, but once he got to the bottom, he was grabbed and taken into custody, New Smyrna Beach police said.

"While officers were attempting to make contact at the door, Mr. Smith exited the room onto the balcony and began to climb down the balconies from the 6th floor," police Sgt. Christopher Roos wrote in his report.

Acting on a tip, New Smyrna Beach police and agents with the United States Marshall Service went to room No. 605,

"Once Mr. Smith reached the ground, he was quickly subdued and taken into custody," Roos said, adding the 46-year-old Smith of Flagler County, was wanted on 37 counts of possession of sexual performance by a child."

Smith was processed at the New Smyrna Beach Police Department and then booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on $925,000 bail.

The wanted man's wife, Tina Marie Smith, 43, was arrested on child pornography possession charges Dec. 30, and remains jailed on the same bail.

Their 25-year-old daughter, Kristilyn Smith, was arrested Dec. 12, on a charge of prostitution, but she was released after a $500 bond was posted.

The Marshall's Service has been the lead agency investigating the alleged child porn ring that after a raid of the parents' Palm Coast residence revealed child porn pictures on a home computer.

The investigation spread to the parents emanating from an alleged prostitution ring the feds claim was run by the daughter. The felony charges against the parents stem from a series of computer disks with images of young children engaged in sex acts. Police suspect some of the photos may have been taken at a Daytona Beach photo shop operated by Alton Everett Smith before it closed a year ago.
