Brush fires on Turnbull Bay and Maytown roads keep crews busy

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 5-acre brush fire on Turnbull Bay Road earlier this afternoon destroyed some fencing, but did not touch half a dozen homes in its potential path, Volusia County officials said.

The 4 p.m. fire just west of the city limits was extinguished by fire crews from thecounty, New Smyrna Beach, Port Orange and the Florida Division of Forestry, said Shelly Szafraniec, Volusia Fire Services spokeswoman.

Szafraniec said no evacuations werre ordered, though several families left on their own and Turnbull Bay Road was closed to through traffic while firefighters fought
the blaze.

The fire was put out 90 minutres later.

And just before 8 p.m., the city of Edgewater Fire Department and the FrorestryService began battling a 10-acre fire moving north on Maytown Road, just west of
Interstate 95.

That fire destroyred a hunting camp, including a few tents and an all-terrain vehicle, though no injuries were reported.

Fire crews are expected to stay through the night to deal with hot spots. That fire was brought under control after 10 p.m.

Szafraniec cautioned residents and motorists would likely have to deal with smokey conditions Tuesday morning, Szafraniec said.

Both fires are being investigated by the Division of Forestry.
