County officials express sorrow over the death of South Daytona Mayor Blaine O'Neal

South Daytona Mayor Blaine O'Neal, 43, died Friday of an apparent heart attack.

SOUTH DAYTONA -- Volusia County Council members expressed shock and sorrow over the sudden death Friday of South Daytona Mayor Blaine O’Neal.

“Blaine was a tireless champion for the citizens of South Daytona, always upbeat, always encouraging and positive,” County Chair Frank T. Bruno Jr. said. “He was passionate about making a difference not only in his community, but also throughout Volusia County and Central Florida.”

County Council member Josh Wagner, whose district includes South Daytona, said, “Blaine played a pivotal role in our community. He distinguished himself with a tremendous intellect and compassion for others. My heart goes out to his family and friends, and the citizens who have benefited from his dedication and passion for our community. I am deeply saddened by his loss. We will miss him.”

O'Neal suffered an appraent heart attack in his chiropractic office and pronounced dead a short time later at Halifax Medical Center at 8:30 a.m.

Bruno reflected on the sudden death of the five-year mayor: “Something like this makes us realize how quickly our lives can change, sometimes in a matter of minutes and often without warning. It reminds us that life is precious and short, and we must keep our priorities in perspective.”
