DAYTONA BEACH -- A 17-year-old girl was speeding when she lost control of her 1997 Chevy at 12:47 a.m. Wednesday while westbound in the 1600 block of Cedar Highlands, smashing a concrete light pole in half with part of the pole landing on top of the vehicle before it struck a parked car in a yard, police said.
Daytona Beach police spokesman Jimmy Flynt said the young motorist "appeared to have been traveling at a high rate of speed," on a small curve in the road and lost control of the vehicle.
"The front end struck a concrete light pole and broke the pole in half and part of the pole fell on top of the vehicle, the vehicle continued on and struck a parked vehicle in the yard at 1633 Cedar Highlands Blvd," Flynt said.
Britney S. Neal, of 1075 Gertrude Court, who turned 17 three days earlier, was transported to Halifax Medical Center with severe trauma to her head and died a short time later.
A passenger, Tyree R. Neal, 19, of the same address, received minor injuries.
