Daytona Beach International Airport receives FAA safety award

DAYTONA BEACH -- Daytona Beach International Airport recently was awarded the Federal Aviation Administration Safety Mark of Distinction Award, Volusia County spokeswoman Vickie Pleus said.

The award recognized DBIA staff for dedication, exemplary effort and support to improve airport safety.

Airport staff was praised by FAA’s Airports Division Manager Robert B. Chapman for improving procedures through programs such as the Graphic Notam System and Wildlife Hazard Management. Chapman also noted the airport’s “impressive operations during NASCAR races.”

The Graphic Notam System is a notification system for airfield tenants. The system graphically details the extent of closures or restrictions to an airfield. The Wildlife Hazard Management program includes wildlife assessment, wildlife habitat management and addresses other risks to air navigation and ground control.

“Our entire staff and airport tenants should be commended for their ongoing effort and commitment to maintaining a safe aeronautical operating environment at Daytona Beach International Airport” said Dennis McGee, airport director of aviation.

The award covers the entire FAA Southern Region, which includes 10 states and 101 qualifying airports. Since its inception in 2004, 12 airports in the southern region have received this award.
