Daytona Bike Week fatalities; Four bikers in Central Florida have died in the first weekend of the big motorcycle rally

DAYTONA BEACH,  Fla. -- Five motorcycle riders have died in four different crashes around Central Florida since Saturday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Here is a synopsis of each fatal accident:

• 8:50 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 27 and Northwest 90th Avenue in Marion County: A 31-year-old Ocala man died after he lost control and overturned his motorcycle on the grass median, FHP troopers said.

• 10:35 p.m. Saturday on State Road 44 and Eau Claire Avenue in Volusia County: A motorist in a car crossed into the opposite lanes and struck two motorcycles heading in the other direction. One rider was seriously hurt and a rider and passenger on the other motorcycle were both killed. A third rider suffered minor injuries as he moved to avoid the crash.

• 10:45 a.m. at Austin Merritt Road and Dusty Lane in Lake County: A motorcycle rider crashed his bike and was killed.

Tens of thousands of bikers are either heading to or leaving greater Daytona during Bike Week, which started Friday and ends next weekend. Overall, between 300,000 to 400,000 motorcyclists ate expected to show up for the biggest motorcycle rally in the country from all over the US and Canada, according to the Daytona Chamber of Commerce, which is the organizer of the 81st annual Bike Week.
