Deputy involved in shooting while at domestic call

DELAND -- A Volusia County Sheriff's deputy was involved in a shooting late Sunday night while responding to a domestic disturbance call on South Blue Lake Avenue.

Deputies were dispatched to a house at 1165 S. Blue Lake Ave. after a woman called 911 at 9:35 p.m. to report that her husband was acting violent, poured gasoline on her and trashed the house.

"The woman fled the house, and when deputies arrived they encountered a man with a shotgun in the driveway," Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said. "Deputies ordered the man several times to put down the weapon, but he refused to comply. A deputy opened fire to defend himself when the man raised the weapon and pointed it in the deputy's direction. The man was struck, but there is no information at this time on the extent of his injury. The man is being flown by Sheriff's Office helicopter to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for treatment. The deputy wasn't injured."
