
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 60-year-old Edgewater motorist was killed early Wednesday morning and his passenger critically injured on Interstate 95 when his sport utility vehicle was hit from behind by a semi tractor-trailer, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The 4 a.m. accident just south of State Road 44 forced troopers to close a stretch of the interstate there for several hours.
The 1999 Chevrolet spun out of control after being hit and overturned, killing the driver, whose name was being withheld while troopers try and notify relatives. His passenger, also identified was taken to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach where she was reported in critical condition.
The driver of the semi, Terry L. Eveleth, 50, of McFarland, Kansas, was not hurt. No charges were filed but an investigation is ongoing, troopers said.
