Edgewater woman airlifted to hospital with gunshot wound to abdomen; husband being questioned

EDGEWATER -- A 71-year-old Godfrey Road woman was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center with a gunshot wound to her abdomen after calling 9-1-1 and telling a dispatcher she had been shot by her husband, a Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said of the 9:37 p.m. emergency dispatch call. The victim was in surgery as of 12:45 this morning, Haught said.

Patricia Malewski was flown by the Sheriff's Air-1 helicopter to Halifax in Daytona Beach reportedly in critical condition from her home 195 Godfrey Road, just south of the Edgewater city line.

"At this point, we are waiting on an update of her injuries," Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.
"She called 9-1-1 and said her husband shot her. The dispatcher could hear the husband in the background yelling it was an accident."

Theodore R. Maslewski, 64, was taken into custody and was being questioned by Sheriff's investigators, Haught said. A 9 mm handgun was recovered from the home.

The couple's home is listed on the Volusia County Property Appraiser's Web site at $2.2 million.
