DELTONA -- An 83-year-old man was struck and killed by a van while walking along a Deltona street earlier tonight, Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught reported.
The incident happened at about 7:06 p.m. as Jack Theison was passing in front of 1851 Trumbull Drive. A van driven by Wilfredo Palomares backed out of the home's driveway and knocked Theison down and ran over him with the rear tires. Palomares then tried to pull forward, running him over a second time, Haught said.
Witnesses called 911. When paramedics and Volusia County Sheriff's deputies responded they had a Sheriff's Office helicopter fly Theison to Halifax Medical
Center in Daytona Beach. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The victim lived on Greenview Drive in Deltona. The van driver lives in DeLand.
The Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident. Civil traffic citations may be issued later, but no criminal charges are expected, Haught said. He said deputies saw no signs that the
driver had any alcohol or chemical impairment.
