NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Hot dogs, popcorn, barbecue chicken and cold drinks were sold. The Beu Sisters performed on stage. And the money came rolling in for 9-year-old Amy Sue Root at a fundraiser Saturday at the Beachside Tavern. The event raised $5,725.
Fund-raising organizers Brittany Gaither, 25, and Tia McDonald, said between $4,500 and $5,000 was expected to be raised over the course of the noon to 4 p.m. event, but Sunday night, the amount was updated to $5,725.
"There might be some more checks coming in that we'll have to add," said Dawn McDonald, Tia's mother and a registered nurse who takes care of Amy Sue during the day in the Root family's Edgewater home.
All of the money will go for a specialty van that is equipped for Amy Sue's head-trauma situation. The little girl was critically injured when she darted out in front of a truck while riding her Razor scooter the afternoon of Jan. 24 and was thrown 60 feet.
She's been in and out of hospital care since then and requires round the clock care at home.
The family is hoping to acquire a specialized van so that she can not only be more comfortable on rides to and from medical visits, but also to get out of the house and go to the beach or a park, said her mother, Sue Root, who was at the fundraiser.
