While the sanctity of human life is priority No. 1 in  a hurricane like Florence that is seemingly stalled over the Carolinas and flexing its muscles with heavy rains and strong winds  and the sad reality of seven deaths, including those of a mother and her infant, the next worse thing to tug at our heartstrings are stranded household pets - namely cats and dogs. But scores of volunteers are doing their part to rescue man's best friends by way of boats as shown in the Associated Press video.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A year ago, it was Ricky Stenhouse who won the war of attrition and NASCAR's signature July race under the lights at Daytona International Speedway.

It was Stenhouse who be the cause of attrition Saturday night with the "Big One" that claimed half the field. But it was a little-known driver, Erik Jones, who passed the reigning series champion, Martin Truex Jr by .125 of a second at the finish line to win the Coke Zero Sugar 400.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Running second with a few laps left on June 12, 2013, Jason Leffler was involved in a crash during a sprint car heat race at the 58-mile Bridgeport Speedway in  Logan Township, NJ, resulting in his  his car suffering a front suspension failure that caused it to crash into a wall and flip over repeatedly.

Memorial Day Forecast: 70% chance of rain, but for those planning to hit the beaches anyway in Daytona, New Smyrna, Ormond, Ponce Inlet & the Shores, here are safety tips from Volusia County

PONCE INLET, Fla.  -- So much for kindness: a 3-foot Lemon shark turned around and nipped a Mount Dora man on the foot after the fisherman went through the trouble of releasing it from his fishing hook on Sunday, the second of two shark-bite incidents reported over the Memorial Day weekend.
