NSB cops: U.S. 1 crash victim stable after rollover; charges pending

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The motorist airlifted to Halifax Medical Center after striking another vehicle and overturning his Isuzu Rodeo several times before striking a tree on U.S. 1 Wednesday night, has been identified as 44-year-old David M. Weightman of New Smyrna Beach. He was listed Thursday night in stable condition.

Weightman, 44, twice sideswiped another truck while northbound on U.S. 1, just north of the Skyline 1949 restaurant, while driving at speeds estimated at 70 mph, before losing control of the vehicle and careening across the four lanes and striking a large oak tree.

The 7:40 p.m. accident forced police and firefighters to shut down a half-mile stretch of the roadway in both directions until midnight to deal with rescuing him from the mangled vehicle and the subsequent clean up.

Charges are pending completion of a police traffic investigation. The other driver suffered back pain, but did not require a trip to the hospital.
