NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 74-year-old woman passenger was thrown from a three-wheeled motorcycle and killed Friday afternoon on U.S. 1, near Arts Center Avenue, after the rider veered to avoid a construction cone.
Glenda Gene Dubon was pronounced dead at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach after her initial transport to nearby Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach with critical injuries following the 2:37 p.m. accident.
Here is a synopsis of what happened from New Smyrna Beach police Sgt. Shane Riggle's report: The rider, who was not identified by police, was southbound in the right-hand lane of U.S. 1 when he veered left to avoid a construction cone, resulting in the victim being ejected from the motorcycle.
She was treated on scene by EVAC Paramedics and transported to Bert Fish Medical Center. She was airlifted to Halifax Hospital a short time later.
The cone was part of a construction zone on U.S. 1 where the state is repaving the road surface, along a mile-long stretch.
The victim was not wearing a helmet and lost a significant amount of blood in the accident.
