ORLANDO, Fla. -- Olympic gold medal sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested Thursday fon a charge of "super speeding" (100 mph or more) on State Road 429, also known as the Daniel Webster Western Beltway, in Orange County, near the Stoneybrook Parkway exit.
Here is a synopsis of what occurred, according to the Ornge County Sheriff's Office: Richrdson, 25, pulled over just after noon on Thursday, for driving 104 mph in a 65 mph zone while behind the wheel of a gray Aston Martin sportscar. She was subsequently arrested and charged with dangerous excessive speeding.
An official with the Orange County Sheriff's Office said Richardson was “dangerously tailgating and traveling across lanes of travel to pass other motorists."
OCSO bodycam video from the traffic incident shows a sheriff's office sergeant pursuing Richardson's vehicle and noting that she's going 104 mph at one point. Here is a synopsis of the dialogue that followed when the stop was made:
"I would wipe that smile off your face," the sergeant says as he approaches Richardson, who's in the driver's seat of the car.
Richardson tries to explain that she had low pressure in a rear tire but the sergeant isn't buying it: "You're driving at 104 miles an hour in a 65 mile an hour zone with sub par equipment, flashing people to get out of your way, following too close, using every lane to pass everybody, cutting me off, passing a car on the inside shoulder with their hazard lights on. You're going to jail for dangerous and excessive speeding," he says.
Richardson responds: "I'm so sorry, I did not mean to do that, my phone, I didn't even know my car was speeding," to which the sergeant says," "That's why they gave you a speedometer," the sergeant responds.
She pleads: "I really do not want to go to jail," to which the OCSO sergeant answers: "Most people don't, but you've gotta think about that before you do the speeding,
The sergeant asks for her license and registration as she continues to apologize: "I am a law abiding citizen, I have my ID, my insurance, my phone, there was no intentions of me speeding today," Richardson says in the video. "Please work with me."
The sergeant responds: "I don't know what 'work with me' means."
Richardson continues to plead her case, to which the OCSO sergeant responds: "Make some phone calls and let people know that you're gonna have a $500 bond," the sergeant says.
Richardson, who resides in Clermont, Florida, was charged with dangerous excessive speeding (100 mph or more), and boked into Orange County Jail, on $500 bond before being released a short time later. when bail was posted
The 25-year-old sprinter is considered one of the fastest women of all time in Olympic competition, winning a gold in the 4x100 relay race and a silver medal in the 100 meters in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.
