Online breaking news reporting 1,300 miles away

Sera and I were on a week-long vacation in Southern New England when I received a call about the small tornado strike on New Smyrna Beach. Thanks to the Internet and our NSBNEWS.net, we were able to deliver the news promptly to folks back home in Southeast Volusia and around the world for that matter, with two hours to spare before the Daytona Beach News-Journal finally got around to posting their own story on their website and rehash the next morning in print. And as is typical on a daily basis, Google also carried our breaking coverage on its news websites.

Even as we were getting dressed in our hotel room for my 30th high school class reunion at the catering hall next door I thanked the tipster who called me on my cell phone. I then called blogger-photographer Jeanette DiCara in Edgewater who raced to the scene and e-mailed me photos and quotes from the scene.

Within 20 minutes, I had the photos re-sized and placed, and a story written and posted online. That is the power of the Internet and the value of NSBNEWS.net.

Here we were in Dayville, Conn., 1,300 miles from New Smyrna Beach and we had a very important news story and photo presentation online for all to see. And, of course, free of charge. No subscription. No delays.

Just 21st century journalism for a 21st century world, with news available to readers near and far on home computers, laptops, cell phones, I-Pads and electronic message boards.

This is just an example as to why NSBNEWS.net is the No. 1 news source for New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater, Oak Hill, Samsula, Silver Sands and Bethune Beach.
