Ormond Beach motorist cited for careless driving after backing onto sunbather near beach ramp in Ormond; Ocala man, 33, hospitalized with injuries to arm & thigh

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- A beachgoer was injured Saturday after he was run over by a Jeep attempting to back up into a parking spot in Ormond Beach, according to a Volusia Sheriff's Office press release.

The incident was reported around 10:43 a.m. Saturday near the Cardinal Drive beach ramp. The 33-year-old Ocala man was sunbathing when the driver of a Jeep traveled outside of the travel lanes to back into a parking spot and ran him over. The man suffered injuries to his thigh and arm. The victim was transported to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach with non-life-threatening injuries, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

The Jeep driver, a 61-year-old Ormond Beach woman, remained on the scene and cooperated fully with the investigation. Deputies cited her for careless driving. There were no signs of impairment. The VSO has not yet released the names of the cited driver or the injured sunbather.

Two TV news outlets—WESH Ch. 2 and WOFL FOX 35—have identified the injured sunbather as Coleson Janey of Ocala. Both outlets briefly interviewed him on camera from his hospital bed.

The VSO noted, "These are the initial details gathered during the early stages of the crash investigation, which is active and continuing."

At 6:25 p.m., Headline Surfer emailed Volusia Sheriff's Office PIOs Andrew Gant and Vicki Karr for the names of the Jeep driver and the injured sunbather and have yet to hear back.
