Sad state of affairs: Deb Denys wins with help of Speedway and others

EDGEWATER -- I can’t believe the people of Volusia County have voted Deb Denys in again as county council member for district 3 representing New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater, Oak Hill and part of Port Orange, Osteen and Lake Helen. After all she and her cohorts have done and are still doing behind everyone’s back, funded by the big wigs who run the county or think they do with their money, and still she gets re-elected?

Volusia County Council candidates Justin Kennedy and David Machuga are shown in the HeadlineSurfer.com Public candidate Debates in the Oak Hill City Hall Commission Chambers in June. Incumbent Deb Denys, shown in the inset, was a no-show as demonstrated by the empty seat in the debate. It was the same scenario in July at the Brannon Center in New Smyrna Beach.

That's just not right. I have lost faith in our political system. It bothers me very much that people with big money like International Speedway Corp. can run the little people into the ground with the help of their “paid” politicians. Oh yes, they all deny that anything is or has been done wrong. That’s a given.

We, the people, need to start paying better attention to what is going on in not only local government but all the way to the top. Look at our choices for governor this year for instance. We take the evil that is or the evil we had before who has been in every party trying to get his career back. We are in need of a different system in this country including more than two parties. We also need those parties to learn to work together and compromise -- not dig in their heels and refuse to do anything while their constituents suffer.

The founders of our Constitution did not all agree on everything either but what they had that is lacking now is the ability to listen to others and make compromises on both sides to accomplish what needed to be done for their new country. They must be rolling over in their graves at what goes on today.

With my loss of faith, I may not even bother to vote this year since as far as I see, the outcomes are already determined by who raises the most money and who has the biggest backers. That’s not how things are supposed to be. I truly don’t feel the little guy’s vote counts much these days.

Too many people are apathetic and just don’t bother to think. It’s a sad state of affairs.
