Sunbather, 23, struck by car on NSB beach

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- a 23-year-old Orlando woman was arilifted to Halifax Medical Center this morning with non-life threatening injuries after she was struck by a car near the Minorca Condominiums while sunbathing between parked vehicles, a Volusia County Beach spokesman said.

The woman's name wasn't released and the extent of her injuries unknown, but the trauma alert transport was "made to be on the safe side" following the 10:30 a.m. accident near the South Jetty area, which is a popular spot for surfers, Beach Patrol spokesman Capt. Scott Petersohn said.

"She was conscious, alert and talking, which is a good thing," Petersohn said. The motorist who struck her was a man in his 30s, also from Orlando. His name was not immediately available.

The young woman is the second beach goer to be struck by a car in the last two weeks. Four-year-old Ellie Brand of Nottingham, England, was killed on the beach in Daytona Beach March 20, after she let go of her uncles hand and darted in front of a car that initially stopped, but then ran over the little girl when she accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, according to a preliminary report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
