I felt special attending a dinner last month honoring Mike and Dana Thompson. Quite a few people attended the dinner held next to the golf course to recognize the well-deserving couple. Many spoke of their accomplishments, Mike as a former mayor of Oak Hill and Dana as a teacher at New Smyrna Beach Middle School.

NSBNEWS.net Stingrays blogger Cheyenne Drews poses with New Smyrna Beach Middle School media specialist teacher Dana Thompson at the dinner honoring Thompson and her husband, Mike, former Oak Hill mayor.
I wrote a poem for both of them.
Although I wasn't on the program, I got to share it with the crowd.
I unintentionally brought the room to tears after presenting the Thompsons with beautiful flowers and reciting my poem. Here it is:
Our Thank You
Why do we look away, When bad news comes our way?
We shy away from problems,
Without trying to solve them.
Children die without enough love. It’s time we all, donated a hug.
Some are ruined, with too much.
Others would give everything, to have such luck.
Hearts go broken and hands un-held.
Why can’t we spare, some time to help?
Our excuse is having so much to do, But who is that according to?
Really, it’s up to you. It’s a cycle, we’ve learned to know. Avoid the sadness and take the back roads.
So, is that the solution, to make the problem disappear?
Well, somewhere in the distance,
You are sure to hear. The cry of the old, young and the new,
All they need’s the help from you.
If just in Africa It would rain. Somewhere things have to change.
But somewhere someone thought, it shouldn’t be this way.
They took a chance; now look where we’re at today.
A chain has been started, with a reaction of the same.
It started with a vision, with nothing to lose and everything to gain.
For standing up for change, we honor you today.
For every life you’ve touched, thank you is all we can say.
Thank you for putting us first, and asking for nothing in return.
It is from you, that we shall all learn.
We always tend to hide,
The hero deep inside.
It’s 100 % true,
That a hero lies in you.
Thank you for,
Everything you do.
It was a great night and I am very excited my parents and I were able to attend.
