DELAND -- Volusia County’s census mail participation rate reached 68 percent today, surpassing its 2000 rate. The percentage is expected to rise over the coming weeks, county spokeswoman Pat Kuehn said.
Volusia ranks 19th among Florida’s 67 counties. The state and national mail participation rates are 64 and 66 percent, respectively.
With a 75 percent participation rate, DeBary holds a slight lead over Ormond Beach, which has 74 percent. Eight municipalities already have passed their 2000 participation rates. They are Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach Shores, DeLand, Lake Helen, New Smyrna Beach, Oak Hill, Ormond Beach and Ponce Inlet. Pierson has tied its 2000 rate with 60 percent.

Residents who did not receive a form in the mail, or who lost their form, may pick one up at Volusia County’s 15 public library branches until April 19. After April 19, census forms can be obtained by calling (866) 872-6868 (English) or (866) 928-2010 (Spanish).
Those who don’t return a form will be visited by census takers in May and June.
