Volusia schools, courts closed Thursday; NSB City Commission meeting rescheduled

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Deciding it was better to be safe than sorry, the Volusia County School District has called off school Thursday for a third day, out of concern of high winds and flooding due to Tropical Storm Fay.
 
With wind gusts of up to 35 mph and steady rain bands forecast throughout the day Thursday, school district Superintendent Margaret Smith made the decision earlier tonight.

Other pertinent cancellations:

# Circuit and county courts in New Smyrna Beach, Daytona Beach and DeLand closed at noon today and will remain closed until  8 a.m., Friday. .

# The New Smyrna Beach City Commission meeting planned  for 5 p.m. Thursday in the DeBerry Room of the Utilities Commission Building, 200 Canal St., has been rescheduled to 5 p.m. Monday.

Sandbags:

# Unincorporated locations in Southeast Volusia -- Volusia County Fire Station 23, 1850 Pioneer Trail, New Smyrna Beach; Volusia County Road and Bridge office, 530 N. Dixie Freeway, New Smyrna Beach: Volusia County Fire Station 22, 213 N. Hwy. U.S. 1, Oak Hill.  Free sand and sandbags are available, but residents need to bring their own shovels and fill and transport bags.There is a 25-bag limit per household.

# Edgewater has sand piles at Rotary Park (corner of West Park Avenue and Carol Ann Drive), Whistle Stop Park (Roberts Road, across from Indian River Elementary School) and Fire Station 57, 2628 Hibiscus Drive. There are no sand bags available. Residents must bring their own shovels and sandbags or double bag the sand with heavy-duty trash bags.

# New Smyrna Beach is providing sand and bags at the Public Works Department, 123 Industrial Ave. The limit is 20 bags per person or the capacity of the vehicle. Residents must bring their own shovels and fill their own bags.
