So far, two bikers have died since Bike Week got under way Friday, but the Florida Highway Patrol has not yet determined whether these initial fatalities are related to the 10-day motorcycle rally centered in Volusia County.
David Pitt, 61, of Oviedo, was killed Sunday night while riding westbound on Interstate 4 in Volusia County when he suddenly fell off his 2006 Harley-Davidson and was run over by a car behind him, the highway patrol said today.
Troopers did not indicate whether he was wearing a helmet or if would have even mattered. Troopers did say the accident may have resulted from a sudden medical condition.
The driver who was behind, Steve Meyers, 43, of Orlando, was unable to avoid striking the victim, troopers said and will not be charged.
A biker killed Friday night in Flagler County was identified as 58-year-old Melvin Douglas Clay of Palm Coast. The helmet-less Clay was riding north on Belle Terre Parkway, a half-mile south of State Road 100, when he lost control of his bike while rounding a curve and he was thrown about 7:30 p.m. Troopers have not yet determined if alcohol was a factor.
