Brush fire in Edgewater closes train traffic for an hour Thursday

EDGEWATER -- Train traffic was shut down Thursday afternoon for about an hour in a wooded area just southwest of the Indian River Elementary School on Roberts Road and some nearby homes while firefighters tended to a brush fire.

Firefighters contained and extinguished the blaze that consumed 1 1/2 acres in the westtward moving fire about 2 p.m. that that included the Florida East Coast railway easement and within a stone's throw of of homes on India Palm Drive.

School officials sad the fire was something they monitored, but was not threatening to the grounds as school was readying to finish for the day.

Firefighters took about 20 minutes to put it out and the better part of the following hour dealing with hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire department officials were investigating a report that two boys were seen leaving the area on bicycles.
