NSB cops: Man shot to death in SUV from Eustis (updated at 1:34 a.m Tuesday to include Sheriff's report)

Courtesy photo/NSB PD. A man found shot to death early this morning in an SUV behind an Edgewater bar has been identified by New Smyrna Beach police as 25-year-old Jeremy M. Markley of Eustis. His killer remains at large.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The man found shot to death in a sport utility vehicle early this morning behind an Edgewater bar has been identified as 25-year-old Jeremy M. Markley of Eustis, New Smyrna Beach police said.

Police have released few details on the case because they are still looking for his killer.

Here is a synopsis of what happened as provided by police Sgt. spokesman Michael Brouillette: "On Sunday, at 11:25 P.M., police responded to a report of shots being fired between two vehicles in the 1400 block of S. Palmetto St.

"While investigating the initial shots fired call, police received a second related call in reference to a deceased male who was located in a vehicle in the rear parking lot of Hi Tops Bar, 319 N. Ridgewood Ave Edgewater," Brouilette said.

New Smyrna Beach Detectives, State Attorney Homicide Task Force Investigators, and Florida Department of Law Enforcement crime scene technicians responded, to both locations, about a mile in between.

An autopsy was conducted earlier today and the exact cause and manner of Markley's death is pending the results of the autopsy.

Police are following-up on leads, which may lead to the identity of the shooter,  Brouillette said.

DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO HIGH TOPS BAR TO ASSIST THE EDGEWATER POLICE DEPARTMENT IN REFERENCE TO A PERSON FOUND SHOT IN A RED FORD EXPLORER. ONCE ON SCENE IT WAS DETERMINED THE ACTUAL SHOOTING OCCURRED IN THE 1400 BLOCK OF PALMETTO ST WITHIN THE CITY OF NEW SMYRNA BEACH.

DEPUTIES ASSISTED EDGEWATER AND NEW SMYRNA BEACH POLICE IN BLOCKING OFF BOTH CRIME SCENE LOCATIONS AND SETTING UP A MEDIA RESPONSE AREA. ADDITIONALLY DEPUTIES ASSISTED HANDLING CALLS WITH IN THE CITY OF NEW SMYRNA BEACH UNTIL ADDITIONAL OFFICERS COULD BE CALLED IN. INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE SHOOTING ORIGINATED AS A REPORT OF SEVERAL VEHICLES CHASING EACH OTHER NEAR OLD MISSION AND SR-44 N.S.B.

A BOLO WAS GIVEN OUT FOR THE RECKLESS DRIVING VEHICLES. A SHORT TIME LATER DEPUTIES OVER HEARD A CALL DISPATCHED BY R.C.C. FOR EDGEWATER POLICE, REFERENCE TO A PERSON SHOT AT HIGH TOPS BAR.
AS INFORMATION WAS GATHERED FROM BOTH AGENCIES IT WAS DETERMINED THE RECKLESS DRIVING CALL WAS RELATED TO THE SHOOTING. DURING THE INVESTIGATION VCSO UNITS RECEIVED A REPORT OF A STOLEN VEHICLE FROM 404 HICKORY. (GREEN SATURN) THE VEHICLE OWNER WAS NOT PRESENT AND THE STORY RELATED TO IT BEING STOLEN WAS SUSPICIOUS.

THE STOLEN VEHICLE REPORT WAS NOT TAKEN. THE VEHICLE DESCRIPTION WAS SIMULAR TO THE SUSPECT VEHICLE IN THE SHOOTING CALL. ALL INFORMATION RELATED TO THE SUPPOSED STOLEN VEHICLE WAS TURNED OVER TO INVESTIGATOR (DAN) KENNEDY OF NSB POLICE.
