DELTONA -- A local man lost his life Thursday afternoon in a three-car crash in Deltona and a second person suffered minor injuries in the accident, which is under investigation by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
The crash occurred at about 2:10 p.m. at the intersection of Saxon Boulevard and Alladin Drive. Based on the preliminary investigation at the scene, a 2002 Saturn station wagon was turning left onto Saxon Boulevard when it pulled into the path of an oncoming 1999 Plymouth mini van traveling east on Saxon Boulevard, Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.
The driver of the mini van, 19-year-old Noel Nieves of Deltona, swerved but was unable to avoid the collision. Following the impact, the mini van continued into the opposite lane of traffic on Saxon Boulevard and collided with a 2001 Pontiac passenger car.
The driver of the Saturn was transported by EVAC ambulance to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City, where he was pronounced dead, Davidson said.
The identity of the victim, who lives in Deltona, is being withheld until his family is notified.
Nieves was transported by EVAC ambulance to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for treatment of minor injuries. The occupants of the third vehicle, 36-year-old Heather Almany of Deltona and a 5-year-old child, weren't injured.
The crash caused an estimated $21,000 worth of damage to the three vehicles, Davidson said.
