Deltona motor-vehicle fatality victim identified

DELTONA -- The victim who died in Thursday's three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Saxon Boulevard and Alladin Drive is 76-year-old Joseph Freed, Jr. of 1129 Madura Drive, a Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman said.

The crash occurred at about 2:10 p.m. Based on the preliminary investigation at the scene, a 2002 Saturn station wagon was turning left onto Saxon Boulevard when it pulled into the path of an oncoming 1999 Plymouth mini van traveling east on Saxon Boulevard, Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.

The driver of the mini van, 19-year-old Noel Nieves of Deltona, swerved but was unable to avoid the collision. Following the impact, the mini van continued into the opposite lane of traffic on Saxon Boulevard and collided with a 2001 Pontiac passenger car. The driver of the Saturn was pronounced dead on arrival at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City.
