SE Volusia Relay for Life to 'Rock the Cure' at 10th annual overnight event April 16-17; $64,000 raised so far with goal of $170,000

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Southeast Volusia Relay for Life will 'Rock the Cure' when it celebrates the 10th annual overnight event April 16-17 in New Smyrna Beach's Riverside Park. Beginning 5:30 p.m.that Friday and continuing into Saturday, it is it held annually as a major fund-raising initiative for the American Cancer Society.

Southeast Volusia Relay for Life is a life-changing event that celebrates the lives of those who have and who continue to battle cancer, remembers loved ones lost and fights back against the disease. Because cancer never sleeps, Relay events are overnight and continue for 18 hours.

SEV Relay continually ranks among the top 20 events throughout Florida, currently listed as No. 17 following a monumental 2009 event where 62 teams raised $147,000.

So far in 2010, SEV Relay has 54 teams and $64,000 raised with a projected goal of $170,000. While teams have hosted fundraisers throughout the year, they also participate on event night with individual campsites decked out representing the theme, "Rock the Cure."

The entire community is invited to join in the fun and for the first time, SEV Relay for Life will conduct a live auction to raise additional funds to support ACS and continue the tradition of celebrating birthdays.

The auction, conducted by auctioneer, Jim Dalla Rosa, owner of USA Auctioneering, Inc., will follow the Survivor Lap at the opening ceremony and include several sought after items from a Montgomery Gentry signed guitar and offshore fishing trip for three on the Lady J to a one-week condo stay at Holiday Cove South in New Smyrna Beach and a portrait sitting fee on the beach with a canvas.

Traditional nightly activities include celebrating with the survivor ceremony and lap, remembering with the luminaries and fighting back with fundraising activities.
