NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- America¹s Cup it's not, but this weekend New Smyrna Beach will host a yacht race steeped in Central Florida tradition. Welcome to Smyrna Yacht Club¹s Lipton Cup Regatta this Saturday and Sunday, where a series of offshore races will be held in the Atlantic Ocean just outside the Ponce De Leon Inlet.
In addition to racing enthusiasts, Smyrna Yacht Club is hoping to attract many of the cruising boats in the area and that pass through New Smyrna Beach. All with an appropriate sailing vessel are invited to participate.
The regatta will accommodate four offshore racing classes: The races will be around an approximately 10-mile triangular course plus a windward leeward finish.
Registration will be $75 for the entire weekend. There will be two races on Saturday, and a third race on Sunday.
Racing Divisions:
* Division I: Boats with unlimited sails, including spinnakers;
* Division II - Boats with all sails without spinnakers;
* Division III - Cruising boats;
* PHRF handicapping system.
Racers will be welcomed with a cocktail party at the club's Tiki Hut on Friday evening. A Buffet will be held at the Tiki on Saturday evening (per person charge). The awards presentation will be on Sunday at Happy Hour after the race. A cash bar will be available for all events. All participants, crews and families are welcome.
