Leon Leroy Reed

March 27, 1918 - June 3, 2010

Funeral service for Leon Leroy Reed, age 92, of New Smyrna Beach, who passed away peacefully at Hospice Care Center, Edgewater, on June 3, will be 7:00 p.m. Friday(today) June 4, at Settle-Wilder Funeral Home, New Smyrna Beach. The Reverend Laura Walters Baskett will officiate the service. Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Born March 27,1918 in Lowville, NY, to Roland and Mabel Reed, Leon moved to Wellsboro, PA in 1946; to Apollo Beach, FL in 1984 and finally to New Smyrna Beach in 2005. In Wellsboro, Mr. Reed was the founder and owner of Reed's Cable TV System, Reed and English Hardware, and built and maintained the former Coin-Op Laundromat. Mr. Reed was a two term mayor of Wellsboro, past president of the Wellsboro Lions Club, past commodore of the Watkins Glen Yacht Club in New York, member of the Smyrna Yacht Club, former member of the Wellsboro Loyal Order of Moose, member of the former Apollo Beach Yacht Club and long-time member of the Wellsboro United Methodist Church. Mr. Reed was an avid boater, first with his 1963 40 foot Owens Ju-Be-Le on Seneca Lake in Watkins Glen and later with his 43 foot Hatteras SandyJ on Tampa Bay. Mr. Reed also enjoyed riding his Harley with his beloved Maltese, Max, on the back.

He is survived by his wife Sandra; daughter June Cooper of Wellsboro; Stepsons, Marvin (Kim) Haner of Colonial Heights, VA and David (Karen) Haner of Westfield, PA; brother Gerald (Jean) Reed of Glenfield, NY; 5 grandchildren;11 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and friends, and his Maltese Mickey. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Muriel Traxel; daughter Sandra Kay Schnibbe in 1973 and Max in 2003.
