NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Boston vacationers Chad and Beverly Siebel didn't have to go far from their beachside condo rental to find a family night-out event to share with their daughter, Taylor, 3, and son, Parker, 5 months old: The NSB Seaside Fiesta on Flagler Avenue.

"New Smyrna Beach is such a good, quiet family town," Beverly Siebel, noted, a far cry from the fast-paced life in the big city. But like Boston, which is known for its street festivals, New Smyrna Beach knows how to throw a street party, the Siebels quickly added.

"We've been coming down here for the last few years," Chad Siebel noted. This night's fun did not cost an arm and a leg, the Siebels said, having spent $30 on ice cream and some trinkets for the kids.

Despite temperatures in the high 90s and a fast-moving thunderstorm just after 5 p.m. that caused some 3,100 people to lose power for about 45 minutes throughout the city, several thousand people packed the beachfront street for several hours.

The crowds were orderly with no problems, said Sgt. Michael Brouillette, shift supervisor and police spokesman, who was on Canal with several other uniformed officers on bicycles.
