NSB COPS: Suicidal man with handgun Baker-Acted and transported to hospital for psychiatric evaluation

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A Venetian Bay man armed with a handgun and threatening to kill himself was taken into custody without harm to himself or others early Sunday and transported to Bert Fish Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation under provisions of the state's Baker Act.

Neither the man's name or age was released, except that he lives in the Venetian Villa Circle at Venetian Bay. The incident was reported at 12:12 a.m.

Here is a synopsis of what happened as summarized by New Smyrna Beach police Sgt. Shane Riggle in his report:

"Police received a call in reference to an armed suicidal male. It was learned that the male resided at the listed address in Venetian Bay subdivision. When police units arrived at the residence, a member of the Regional Communication Center was directed to contact the male via telephone. Once RCC established contact, the male confirmed he was attempting suicide. A short time later, members of the New Smyrna Beach Police Department made entry into the home. The male was located and taken into custody under the Baker Act criteria of the State of Florida. He was later transported to Bert Fish Medical Center."

Riggle added no criminal charges are being filed at this time.
