NEWS FLASH: Two boaters found dead in their vessel near Dissapearing Island

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A husband and wife dead on their Cuddy cabin-style boat earlier today near disappearing Island between Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach have been identified, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

Howard Lupton, 50, and Sandra Lupton, 48, of Palatka, were found by their son on the boat, authorities said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission thinks the victims likely died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator, said Joy Hill, a spokeswoman for the commission.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Christopher Evanson said the discovery was made about 11 a.m. Sunday.

No foul play is suspected and the victims appear to have died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning, said of the FWC, which is responsible for investigating the incident. The New Smyrna Beach Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Disappearing Island, formed from sandbars during the outgoing tide, is a popular destination spot for boaters, because they can swim there and walk dogs and even hold picnics.

This is the second tragic event in consecutive holidays. On Memorial Day, three people lost their lives, when one boat ran on top of another woman, killing a woman nine-months pregnant, her unborn child, and her father.
