NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Volusia County’s Solid Waste Division is hosting a household hazardous waste collection event at the New Smyrna Beach Public Works Department, 124 W. Industrial Park, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13.
Residents may drop off materials such as paint, used oils, pesticides, fluorescent lamps, car batteries and cleaning chemicals without charge. These materials could contaminate ground water if disposed of improperly or pose a threat to the owner if kept too long.
Only non-mixed household hazardous waste will be accepted. Insulin needles will be accepted in approved containers; the containers will not be returned. Businesses are not eligible for free disposal during this collection event. Obsolete electronics and tires also will not be accepted.
Year-round recycling of obsolete electronics and paint and disposal of household hazardous waste is available without charge at the Tomoka Landfill in Port Orange and the West Volusia Transfer Station in DeLand.
Tires may be disposed at the sites for a nominal fee, and paint is collected and made available to residents through a free paint exchange program.
