NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- It looked like a pharmacy in the trunk of a DeLand woman’s car when a Volusia County Sheriff’s sergeant looked inside after pulling her over due to her erratic driving, an agency spokesman said. Gloria Prinz was arrested on several charges Wednesday afternoon to include DUI and possessing prescription drugs for sale when a traffic stop in New Smyrna Beach revealed nearly 1,000 prescription pills obtained from 16 different doctors.
Sheriff's Sgt. Keith Peck witnessed the 33-year-old woman driving erratically at about 5 p.m. in the intersection of Sams Avenue and Canal Street, Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said, noting that as Peck followed her, she crossed the center line, turned without a signal and drove through two stop signs without stopping. Peck pulled her over in the parking lot of the Volusia County Courthouse Annex on Riverside Drive.
Prinz revealed that her driver license had been suspended for a previous DUI and that she was driving a vehicle rented by a friend, Haught said. Once Prinz was secured in the back of Peck’s patrol car on a DUI arrest, the deputies inventoried her vehicle and found the pills, Haught said.
"A pill container was found in the center console containing xanax, oxycodone, soma and meloxicam," the spokesman said, adding, "In the trunk were 40 pill bottles in Prinz’s name obtained from 16 different doctors from all across Florida .There were nearly 1,000 pills in total with most of them being soma, diazepam, methadone, oxycodone, klonopin and alprazolam. More bottles of oxycodone were found in her purse along with about $1,200 in small bills."
Prinz was charged with possession of prescription drugs for sale, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, resisting an officer with violence, DUI, refusal to submit to DUI testing, driving with a suspended driver license, and violation of probation.
Prinz was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach with no bond. Prior to the pills discovery, the deputy reported her speech was slurred and that when she got out of the vehicle she was unsteady on her feet, Haught said.
After conducting a field sobriety test, the deputy directed her to stand next to her car, but Prinz refused to follow his orders and initially resisted his attempts to arrest and handcuff her, before back-up arrived.
