NEW SMYRNA BEACH –  Police Chief Ron Pagano has good reason to smile these days.

He and his 53-member police force will be in their new station before the end of the year, according to a timetable announced at Tuesday's City Commission meeting by City Manager Pam Brangaccio.

While Pagano had hoped i would be in two weeks or less, he agreed with the city manager there were still some small wrinkles to iron out that deal with adherence to building codes and technology.

“The phone system needs to be switched over but we’re not ready for that yet,” Pagano said. “We also have to make sure our new evidence room is secure.”

The city manager informed the commissioners the new fire station next door had already received its certificate of occupancy.

Both public safety departments held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 11 for the new 28,000-square foot complex located on Industrial Park Road and behind the current police station.

FAST FACTS

  • The city’s new police and fire station public safety complex costs $6.7 million with funding through bonds from a voter-approved referendum.
  • The general contractor is APM Construction of Port Orange.
  • The new police station is approximately 28,000 square feet, compared to the current facility that comprises 11,542 square feet.
