ORMOND BEACH -- A carload of Spring Breakers heading for Miami overturned here today on Interstate 95, killing one of six people in the vehicle and critically injuring another who was trapped underneath, the Florida Highway Patrol reported
Jee Choie, 21, of Northvale, N.J., was pronounced dead at the scene of the 8:40 a.m. accident, at mile marker 276 on I-95 within the Ormond Beach city limits. Choie was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the 1998 Land Rover, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Valerie Corvino, 21, of New York, was also throwm from the SUV and then trapped under it as it came to a rest after rolling multiple times. She was taken to Halifax Medical Center in critical condition. The FHP report said she was not wearing a seatbelt.
All six occupants of the vehicle attend college together in Pittsburgh.
The accident was not alcohol related according to the FHP accident report.
Witnesses told troopers the vehicle was traveling southbound in the center lane of the interstate when it began to swerve toward the center median. The driver, Kyla Graham, 21, of Honolulu, over-corrected and the SUV rolled over multiple times, ejecting two of the passengers in the process, according to the highway patrol.
Graham, who was wearing her seatbelt, was taken to Halifax Medical Center with minor injuries.
Two other passengers, Christina Aliprando, 20, of New Jersey, and Anya Rosen, 21, of Los Angeles, sustained minor injuries. Aliprando was wearing a seatbelt, but the FHP did not determine whether Rosen wore a seatbelt.
Jeremy Philipson, 20, of New York, wore a seatbelt and was not injured in the accident. FHP is continuing to investigate and charges are pending.
