OAK HILL -- Until you have been diagnosed with cancer and have a million questions, you don't think about what the American Cancer Society does or what it can do for you.
It has a 24-hour telephone hotline 1-800-ACS-2345 or you can go online at http://www.cancer.org.
I have served on the Southeast Volusia Board for more than five years and I want to tell you what we need right now. Although remarkable progress has been made in cancer treatment, one of the greatest challenges for patients is a lack of transportation to and from their treatment centers.
You can help save a life by volunteering to drive someone to a medical facility in our area primarily to Bert Fish Regional Oncology for chemotherapy or Halifax Health for radiation. If you have one or more mornings or afternoons free each month, you can join our Road to Recovery program. You can volunteer as often as your schedule allows-some people can only drive once a month, but others can drive two or three times a month.
The American Cancer Society provides orientation, support materials and other assistance if needed. You must attend the Road to Recovery training and then you'll be prepared to "hit the road"and help someone in need.
Please call your local American Cancer Society at 386-274-3274 for more information. And please try to find time to help: Drivers are desperately needed in Southeast Volusia. Thank you.
Editor's Note: Commissioner and Vice Mayor Linda Hyatt and fellow Commissioner Douglas Gibson are non-partisan candidates on the Nov. 6 general elections ballot to be the next mayor of Oak Hill. Hyatt started writing a blog for Headline Surfer well before she announced her intention to run. Gibson doesn't have a problem with it. It has been made clear to Hyatt the blog is not for self-promotion in this election and she understands that condition.
