Wrath of tornado: $1.7 million worth of damage to 90 manufactured homes in Terra Mar Village near Edgewater

Drew Cavanaugh. Shown below is a snapshot of damage to two of the homes in the TerraMar Village just south of Edgewater city limits. A total of 90 homes sustained $1.7 million worth of damages.

Tornado strikes  Terra Mar Village near Edgewater / Headline SurferEDGEWATER -- The numbers speak volumes as to the wrath of Monday's tornado on the Terra Mar Village Community with $1.7 million in damage to 90 homes.

That's three times as many homes as Volusia County officials estimated shortly after the fast-moving storm that spawned what the National Weather Service in Melbourne said was EF1 tornado.

The Volusia County Property Appraiser's office came up with the $1.7 million figure with a breakdown of property damage as follows for 90 homes impacted by the tornado: Five destroyed, 40 with major damage, 17 with minor damage and another 28 with very minor damage.

Local groups are offering assistance to the tornado victims, Volusia County spokeswoman Joanne Magley told Headline Surfer.

"Habitat for Humanity and the Mormon church are providing free tarps, cutting trees and removing debris."  she said.

Employees with Volusia County’s Public Works department are only clearing public rights-of-way for safe travel and access. Work was anticipated to be completed by mid-week There is no special pick up for storm debris.

Affected residents are asked to adhere to the following guidelines:
● Construction and demolition debris (aluminum siding, tile, screening, drywall, etc.) is not included with normal residential waste collection service. Homeowners are responsible for disposal.
● Contractors hired by the homeowner are responsible for debris disposal. Contractor-generated debris is not eligible for curbside collection and must be delivered to a permitted solid waste disposal facility.
● Household hazardous wastes (paint cans, aerosol sprays, pesticides, etc.) should not be comingled with the storm debris and can be dropped off at the Tomoka Landfill or West Volusia Transfer Station free of charge.
● Homeowners may haul debris to the following locations for a nominal fee: § Tomoka Landfill, 1990 Tomoka Farms Road, Port Orange Hours of operation: Monday – Saturday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. § West Volusia Transfer Station, 3151 E. New York Avenue, DeLand Hours of operation: Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.
 
Residential Waste Collection Guidelines:
● Garbage pickup is Friday; service includes the blue 95 gallon cart and one additional 32-gallon size container.
● Recycling pickup is Friday.
● Yard trash pickup is Monday; service is limited to 2 cubic yards per week. Limbs may not exceed 4 feet in length or 1 foot in diameter. Cans & limbs must weigh less than 60 lbs. You may contract directly with the garbage company to provide collection and disposal of additional debris at a cost of $10.00 per cubic yard
● Do not place storm debris on the right-of-way or near a water meter, fire hydrant, or other above-ground utility.
● Whole trees cut or blown down are not included in yard trash service.
● Bulky waste is limited to four pieces of furniture, appliances, carpet, tires, or the like per week.
● Carpet must be cut, rolled and tied (or taped) in bundles no greater than 4’ x 8’ and no more than 60 pounds in weight.
