Eugene Blackwell Sr., 45, was arrested on a charge of attempted murder for allegedly shooting his son, Eugene Blackwell Jr., 18, after a domestic argument turned violent, police said. The victim was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center shortly after the 6:34 p.m. shooting. He is currently undergoing surgery at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for multiple gunshot wounds and listed in critical condition.
"Several neighbors called police after hearing gunshots from the home and seeing Blackwell Jr. running to a neighbor’s for help, Master Sgt. Eugene Griffith told Headline Surfer®. "Other witnesses observed Blackwell Sr. drive away from the residence in the predominantly African-American Westside community in a Dodge pick-up truck. Police later found the vehicle abandoned in the 400 block of Duss Street."
The investigation revealed the dispute began as a verbal argument between Blackwell Sr. and his wife., Griffith said. When Blackwell Jr. intervened into the argument he was shot multiple times, after his mother left the home, the police spokesman added.
Blackwell Sr. was arrested after turning himself into police. He was charged with attempted murder and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond allowed.
