Public invited to April 20 Environmental Justice Conference in New Smyrna Beach

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- The public is invited to an April 20 Environmental Justice Conference in New Smyrna Beach, overseen by Donna Gray-Banks, the municipality's community resource coordinator. Here are the details:

What: Environmental Justice Conference geared toward non-profit organizations, governments, community stakeholders, students, scholars, artists and environmental health professionals.

Dr. Deanna Wathington, Bethune-Cookman University College of Health Sciences executive dean, will discuss how the environment affects health. Environmental engineers and community redevelopment staff will define brownfields and environmental justice and discuss community perspectives.

Who should attend: Scholars, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, community stakeholders, students, environmental health professionals and artists.

When: 9 a.m. - noon, Wednesday, April 20.

Where: Alonzo ‘Babe’ James Community Center, 201 N. Myrtle Ave., New Smyrna Beach.

Why: The conference is hosted by Southeast Volusia Corridor Improvement Coalition (SVCIC), which is comprised of the cities of Edgewater, Oak Hill and New Smyrna Beach.

The SVIC received $600,000 in assessment funding through a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Community-wide Petroleum and Hazardous Substance Assessment Grant. Funds may provide financial support and technical assistance for brownfields activities by promoting partnerships, assessing environmental conditions, strengthening the economic marketplace, sustaining reuse of underutilized properties and protecting public health and the environment.

Cost: The conference is free and open to the public. RSVPs are not required.
