NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- The animal control department at the City of New Smyrna Beach has received a $500 equipment grant from the Florida Animal Control Association for additional equipment to keep the public, officers and animals safe.

With the grant, the department received two new cat traps, tight space cat grab (EZ-Nabber), slip leashes, bite stick and quick draw collapsible net.

"The prior equipment that the animal control department had was rusty and falling apart," city spokeswoman Anna Hackett said. "The equipment was implemented immediately. The net has assisted with injured bird calls and the slip leashes have been distributed throughout the department for stray dog captures and the EZ-Nabber assisted in rescue of an injured cat. The new equipment has facilitated safer work for code enforcement personnel.
