DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Daytona International Speedway has undertaken a new project to further improve the infield for the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA and NASCAR Weekends.
"Daytona International Speedway is putting the construction vehicles to work as the 'World Center of Racing' has undertaken another improvement project in the infield that will provide benefits to the fan experience for Rolex 24 At Daytona and NASCAR weekends," DIS spokesman Andrew Booth said in a press release.
"The project will create a new Midway area by paving approximately six acres of the infield between the International Horseshoe/driver-owner motorhome lot to Lake Lloyd Road," Booth added.

"The project will create a new Midway area by paving approximately six acres of the infield between the International Horseshoe/driver-owner motorhome lot to Lake Lloyd Road," Booth added.
Other amenities included in the project:
- A 12-foot wide concrete sidewalk that runs 1,650 linear feet east/west along the new Midway and another eight-foot wide concrete sidewalk that runs 500 linear feet north/south connecting the new midway to the entrance of the UNOH Fanzone.
- An LED-lit walkway, benches, flexible landscaping and approximately 1,400 linear feet of temporary decorative fencing.
- A new tram pick-up/drop-off location behind the driver/owner lot for all events excluding the day of the Daytona 500 and the Coke Zero 400, which will continue to be in the NASCAR XFINITY garages adjacent to the UNOH Fanzone.
The newly-paved Midway will serve as the primary display area for the Rolex 24 weekend, which in 2018 is scheduled for Jan. 25-28, and will accommodate more than 100 20-by-40-foot RV sites during NASCAR weekends.
"The project is already underway and will be completed by October," Booth said. He did not release information on construction costs or funding sources.
DIS is among 13 tracks nationwide owned by International Speedway Corporation, a publicly traded corporation. ISC is chaired by Lesa France Kennedy. Her brother, Brian France, is chairman and CEO of NASCAR, a private entity owned by the France family. The Frances, who have a controlling interest in ISC, have a net worth of $5 billion, according to Forbes magazine.
