DELAND, Fla. -- A Volusia Sheriff’s Office sergeant has been pulled from road patrol duties following his out-of-state arrest back in January for driving under the influence.
Sgt. Steven Edgecomb was arrested last week by the Summit County Sheriff's Office following a traffic stop near Breckenridge, Colo. He was charged with DUI and weaving from a traffic lane.
Upon notification of the arrest, VSO opened an internal affairs investigation that will remain open pending the outcome of the criminal case.
In the meantime, the sergeant’s on-duty driving privileges have been revoked and he has been relieved of all law enforcement duties.
Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood has remained silent on the arrest. Andrew Gant, his main PIO tried to soften the sting of Edgecomb's DUI arrest, stating: "While a member of law enforcement is entitled to the same due process rights as anyone else, we are sharing this arrest because we recognize law enforcement officers must be held to a higher standard than the general public."
Gant added: Edgecomb was hired in 2006 and has had "no prior incidents of this nature," without clarifying what that actually means.
In Colorado, a standard DUI is typically charged when a driver's Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is 0.08% or higher, or when there is sufficient evidence of actual impairment. Because these charges are based on the same conduct, they often run concurrently.
A standard first-time DUI
in Colorado is a Class A misdemeanor, which generally carries the following penalties:
- Jail Time:
5 days to 1 year (though minimums can be suspended if you comply with treatment).
- Fines:
$600 to $1,000 (plus court costs).
- Public Service:
48 to 96 hours.
- License Revocation:
9-month suspension by the Colorado DMV.
- Alcohol Education:
Mandatory completion of state-approved education and therapy classes.
- Ignition Interlock Device (IID):
Required for early license reinstatement (typically 8 months).
