Sheriff's Office: 41 arrested during West Volusia street crimes operation

DELAND -- A multi-agency crime suppression operation targeting gang activity and street crimes such as robbery, burglary, drugs and auto theft swept through West Volusia Friday night, resulting in 41 arrests and 90 traffic citations, said a Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman.

The arrests included eight for felony offenses and 33 for misdemeanors.

Three store clerks in DeBary area nabbed in sting targeting alcohol sales to minors

DEBARY -- Three store clerks are facing criminal charges following an undercover sting operation Friday night in the DeBary area aimed at combating the sale of alcohol to minors, said a spokesman for the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

The operation was conducted by the Sheriff's Office in conjunction with the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco.

Daytona Beach biker dies in crash with van

ORMOND BEACH -- A biker was killed Thursday after slamming his Suzuki into the back of a van stopped at the railroad tracks on Granada Boulevard, Ormond Beach police said.

Brian Amick, 35, of Daytona Beach, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 10:05 a.m. accident, police said.

The van was behind a school bus, stopped at the railroad crossing by law, when the eastbound biker crashed into the van, police said.

The impact broke the motorcycle into several pieces, police said.

Daytona cops: Man found dead with slashed throat

DAYTONA BEACH -- A 46-year-old Reva Street man was found dead with his throat slashed in his residence by a family member Monday afternoon, police said.

The victim was identified as Sebastian "Tony" Cross, found dead by sibling Cecil Cross, 44, shortly after 2 p.m. police said.

Police said they have no motives or suspects for the killing of the man who had 14 siblings altogether.

Daytona cops: Homeless man found passed out with booze taken from nearby Halifax Yacht Club

DAYTONA BEACH - A homeless man was found passed out over the weekend near the Halifax River Yacht Club's Tiki Bar, after taking a few bottles of beer there, Daytona Beach police said.

Scott Riley, 28, was found sleeping in bushes across the street from the yacht club in the 300 block of South Beach Street.

Next to Riley were several bottles of beer and a blue cooler that was labeled, "Halifax River Yacht Club," police said, in waking him Sunday night and charging him with with burglary.

Riley was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail.

County Children and Families Advisory Board subcommittee to meet Aug. 25 AND Sept. 1

DELAND -- The Children and Families Advisory Board Request for Proposal pilot program subcommittee will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 25 and Sept. 1, in the Volusia County Council Chambers of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W. Indiana

Countywide committee kicks off census-awareness campaign

DELAND -- Volusia counts. Everybody counts.

With that message, Volusia County’s Complete Count Committee is kicking off a major public-awareness campaign to encourage all residents to complete and return their 2010 census questionnaires, said Psat Kuehn, Volusia County spokeswoman.

All persons who live in Volusia County at least six months a year are counted.

"Volusia Prepares" group to meet Friday to review 5-year update to local mitigation study

DAYTONA BEACH -- A meeting of "Volusia Prepares," the working group for Volusia County’s Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS), will be at 10 a.m. Friday, at Volusia County Schools Facilities Services, 3750 Olson Drive, Daytona Beach. The meeting is open to the public and public participation is encouraged.

The purpose of the countywide LMS is to identify strategies to reduce
the impact of natural and manmade disasters before they occur, said Shelley Szafraniec, spokeswoman for Volusia County.

Palm Coast man charged with exposing himself in car at Taco Bell

PALM COAST -- A 38-year-old Palm Coast man was arrested early Monday morning after he was observed fondling himself in his car at the Taco Bell fast-food restaurant on Palm Coast Parkway, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office reported.

An adult and three teens observed Eron Adam Tucker fondling himself in his vehicle, the agency said of the 1 a.m. incident, resulting in his arrest on exposure charge.
