NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Saturday's planned debates for the mayor and two city commission seats have been moved to the Hidden Lakes Golf Club to address parking, seating and traffic limitations.
The program gets under way at 9 a.m. in the Hidden Lakes' Greenview Room, which seats up to 200 people. Hidden Lakes is located at 35 Fairgreen Ave.
SOUTH DAYTONA — As part of its Friday evening DUI/Safety Checkpoint, the South Daytona Police Department will also utilize Daytona Beach Police Department’s Automatic License Plate Recognition system to spot stolen vehicles.
The ALPR camera system, which is mounted on a police car, captures license plate information and alerts the officer if the vehicle has been reported stolen. The high tech system is capable of scanning thousands of tags per hour, greatly extending the capability and efficiency of the department, officials said.
I do not think that any health care insurance including Medicare should be a money-making product. I cannot accept the large profits that are made on the backs of the Government and Medicare recipients by private insurance companies.
An example is Humana’s second quarter profits of $281.8 million. How much do they pay their management? How much money are they paying for advertising including useless notices and brochures?

DAYTONA BEACH -- Volusia County’s Complete Count Committee hit the ground running this month, launching a public-awareness campaign designed to make the 2010 Census the county’s most successful census ever, county spokeswoman Pat Kuehn said.
The committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Volusia County Sheriff’s Training Center, 3901 Tiger Bay Road, Daytona Beach. Chairmen of the eight subcommittees will present progress reports.

The format is as follows:
9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Zone 2 city commissioner: Palmer Wilson, Stephen Sather and incumbent Jack Grasty.
10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Zone 1 city commissioner: Frank Dalton Jr., Judy Reiker and incumbent Randy Richenberg.
11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mayor: Marilee Walters, Adam Barringer and incumbent Sally Mackay.
