Victor E. Rosa, 88, of Edgewater, a member of the Christian Church of Edgewater where he enjoyed
delivering communion to shut in's and numerous other church ministries, and survived by five children, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009.

Shirley Rose Roberts, 79, of Edgewater, a retired registered nurse and a former Nursing Director for the Volusia County Health Department, who is survived by her husband, Norman, three children and thnree grandchildren, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A New Smyrna Beach Middle School student told Volusia County Sheriff's deputies that a man tried to lure her into the woods while she was walking to school Thursday morning near South Myrtle Avenue.

She described the man as white with bushy eyebrows and wearing a red shirt and blue jeans while standing near the woods near the Newport Sound Apartments.

Deputies were assisted in a search of the nearby woods by numerous New Smyrna Beach police units, but the man was not located.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Labor Day did not get off to a good start for most sunbathers hoping to catch some early rays.

That's because all of Volusia County's beach ramps, including those in New Smyrna Beach, were not opened until 12:30 p.m. at the earliest because of high tides.

And that meant no motor vehicles on the beach.

Many of the ramps, including the Flagler Avenue Approach had long lines of vehicles waiting to get onto the "world's most famous beach."

DAYTONA BEACH -- Volusia County's unemployment rate for the month of July reached 11.2 percent, higher than the statewide average of 10.7 percent for the same period, according to Florida Labor officials.

In nearby Flagler County, unemployment was even higher at 15.9 percent, the second most in the state, exceeded only by Hendry County.

Unemployment figures for August are expected to be released later this month.

BUNNELL -- A 30-year-old Flagler County man was killed early Friday when he lost control of his Jaguar on U.S. 1 and rolled over, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Miguel Anton was driving north on U.S. 1, about 4:20 a.m. when he ran off the road and onto a grassy area about a mile and a half south of County Road 2002.

The driver was not wearing his seat belt, the FHP said, adding he was pronounced dead at the scene. The car was totaled.

DELTONA -- A family of six was left homeless Saturday when their rental home was destroyed by fire, officials said.

The Deltona Fire Department responded to the blaze at 464 Prscilla Ave., near Lake Monroe at 6 p.m. with visible flames. The fire was put out 40 minutes later.

The family -- three adults and three children -- escaped without injuries and were being assisted by the American Red Cross.

DAYTONA BEACH -- An apologetic thief robbed two convenience stores near Daytona Beach on Labor Day morning, but was caught with the stolen goods just under half an hour after the second robbery behind another convenience store, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.
