'Thank you' to our veterans including one who is a former NSB mayor

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- My father served our country in World War II in the 191st Tank Battalion in the U.S. Army. From 1943 through 1946, my father braved the battlefields of Africa, Italy, Germany, and France, even landing on the beach at Salerno during the allied invasion of Europe. His recollection of his service does not fall under some of his most treasured memories, but his service and the sacrifice of his generation allowed for this world to remain free.

PORT ORANGE -- Today is 11/11/11 - Veterans Day. On this day, we honor those men and women who have defended this nation since its founding and who defend it still.

We owe so many of our freedoms to these brave and dedicated individuals. Though our busy lives may sometimes cause us to take these blessings for granted, we must never forget our nation's veterans, those devoted warriors who have always guarded the freedom and liberty that we hold so dear.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Retired Col. Irving Davidoff was born in 1920. Lauren Lamb is a 21st-century child. Yet the 10-year-old understood the stoic presentation delivered by the 91-year-old Davidoff, the keynote speaker for this morning's Veterans Day service under a beautiful Florida sun.

Do the Citizens of New Smyrna Beach deserve the sacrifices or the blood being shed by our brave men and women in the military day in day out, as they continue to serve all around the world and in two wars, while their families worry and cry on the home-front, in order for every American to have the freedoms that we enjoy each minute of every day? Not from my vantage point on the perch!

Personal health issues nothing to mess with

Sera and I spent a little time Saturday afternoon on Flagler Avenue for the Flamingo Follies art festival after covering the Cudas homecoming football game and all of the pageantry with it, but I have otherwise been unable to do much this weekend. My body is telling me to slow down. I am dealing with abdominal pain and bleeding.

I hope that resting overnight Saturday will give me some strength to continue coverage of the New Smyrna Beach Homecoming Weekend with a return to Flagler on Sunday and the outdoor Eat Street restaurants event at Norwood's Restaurant & Wine Shop on the beachside of the North Causeway on Third Avenue.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- 11/11/11 is the date that will always stay with the family and friends of Chris Dell of Edgewater, tragically killed early Friday in a motorcycle accident. He was just 25, but lived life to the fullest.

 

 

New Smyrna Beach Cudas homecoming game features on the way

We're working on a series of stories on the Cudas football homecoming game and the pageantry with it as well as the related festivities on Flagler Avenue. We'll also have videos on the marching band, the cheerleaders and king and queen halftime crowning. Plus we have a feature on the senior quarterback, Josh Brisbois and a post-game interview with head football coach Lance Jenkins.
