Original costumes emphasized for awards contest following New Smyrna Beach Halloween Parade on Canal Street

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- The cool thing about the shark costume that netted a trophy for 1-year-old Nolan and his proud parents, Nicole and Mike Kirkland of Edgewater at the 2011 New Smyrna Beach Halloween parade was its originality.
The costume was a big hit since New Smyrna Beach is known as the Shark Bite Capital of the World. The young family left the parade with a trophy almost as big as the little shark boy.
"This is a great event for families," said Nicole Kirkland, who made the costume from $20 worth of materials she purchased at Target.
