300 turn out for Relay for Life event

A fundraiser was held Saturday at SoNapa Wine Co. by the Team Ocean Walkers for Relay for Life. The overflowing crowd spilled out into the front of the Third Avenue winery with some 300 people showing up.  Mac McClelland, whose wife, Sue, organized the event, said theit team hoped to raise $2,500 during the three-hoursocial gathering.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- SoNapa Wine Co. provided the wine. Ocean Walk provided the cheese. The wine went much further and for a good cause Saturday: A fundraiser for Relay For Life.

SHERIFF's OFFICE: Edgewater man charged with shooting wife in abdomen

Theodore R. Malewski, 64, was arrested this morning by Volusia County Sheriff's investigators on charges of shooting his wife, Patricia, 71, in the abdomen Thursday night. She called 9-1-1 pleading for help and claiming her husband shot her on purpose. He could be heard in the background yelling it was accidental. Listen to the 9-1-1 audiotape.

EDGEWATER -- Theodore Malewski was arrested Friday morning by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office for shooting his wife in the abdomen the previous evening, an agency spokesman said.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Boaters are being warned by state wildlife officials to back off from a group of rare North Atlantic right whales that have been spotted in the waters off New Smyrna Beach.

The law requires boaters, surfers, swimmers and others to stay at least 500 yards from endangered animals, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

Orlando Sentinel report: SeaWorld trainer pulled under by ponytail in killer whale's jaw and drowned

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting online and in today's print edition newspaper that SeaWorld Orlando trainer Dawn Brancheau died Wednesday as a result of "multiple traumatic injuries and drowning" after a killer whale pulled her underwater by her long ponytail near the theme park's Shamu Stadium.

Edgewater woman airlifted to hospital with gunshot wound to abdomen; husband being questioned

EDGEWATER -- A 71-year-old Godfrey Road woman was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center with a gunshot wound to her abdomen after calling 9-1-1 and telling a dispatcher she had been shot by her husband, a Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said of the 9:37 p.m. emergency dispatch call. The victim was in surgery as of 12:45 this morning, Haught said.

Votran Bike Week service interruptions announced

DAYTONA BEACH -- With the heavy traffic that comes with Bike Week, Votran riders should expect numerous delays, interruptions and route deviations. Schedule delays will begin Monday, and continue
through the following Sunday, March 7.

Detours are subject to change without notice. “Votran will make every effort to notify customers as soon as the detours and route deviations are expected,” said Ken Fischer, Votran general manager. “Buses will be rerouted to secondary roads when traffic becomes congested.”

Sheriff's Office searching for murder suspect in DeLeon Springs gunshot slaying

DELEON SPRINGS -- Volusia County Sheriff's deputies investigating the September 2009 fatal shooting in DeLeon Springs of a 33-year-old man have concluded that the killing was sparked by a drug deal that went bad, an agency spokesman said.
